Musicologist, music critic, producer and publisher of classical music recordings, music promoter. Graduate of Musicology at Warsaw University, he is an acknowledged expert in piano music, particularly interpretation of Chopin’s works.
In 1974, he started working for the Polish Radio to remain there for the subsequent 33 years. His work in editorial sections and classical music departments involved preparing and hosting his own programmes, such as the famous “Chopin Wednesdays”. The number of his listeners was estimated at about 1.5 billion. Since 1975 he has been reviewing the consecutive editions of the International F. Chopin Piano Competition for the Polish Radio and Television. In 1996, he originated and founded a record label within the Polish Radio, which produced a catalogue featuring about 400 recordings. Several dozen CDs under this label were nominated to, and about a dozen received the Fryderyk statuette, an annual award in Polish music.
The year 1999 brought collaboration with Krystian Zimerman and the world tour of his Polish Festival Orchestra to mark the 150th anniversary of Chopin’s death. Popis has also been adviser to Rafał Blechacz. In 2010, he produced Adam Harasiewicz’s CD titled Chopin – komplet mazurków [Chopin – A Collection of Mazurkas].
Since 1973 Popis has been writing reviews and articles to professional music journals, mainly the “Ruch Muzyczny” monthly. In the years 2000–2005 he was the chief editor of the “Chopin Competition Magazine”. He participates in musicological conferences, gives lectures in music schools, including the USA and Canada, and at international courses of music interpretation, and writes entries to Polish Music encyclopedias. He serves on juries at such international piano competitions as the V. Horowitz Competition, the E. Gilels Competition, the H. Czerny-Stefańska Competition and the A. Rubinstein Competition.
Since 2000 Popis has been artistic director of the Festival of Polish Pianism in Słupsk, the most signifi cant and prestigious national musical event devoted to Polish pianists and Polish piano works. Since 1993 he has been the programme originator and artistic director of the International Youth Piano Competition “Artur Rubinstein in Memoriam” in Bydgoszcz, whose winners include Yulianna Avdeeva and Rafał Blechacz. In 2007, he was appointed artistic and programme director of the Polish record label “MUZA Polskie Nagrania” by open competition.
In recognition of his activity he has received the Medal for the Best Music Critic of the Year from the Association of Polish Artists Musicians (for his reviews of the Chopin Competition), the Gloria Artis Medal (twice), the Pro Sinfonika Medal and the I. J. Paderewski Pro Arte Medal. Actively engaged in social life, he is currently acting as President of the Main Board of the Association of Polish Artists Musicians.
